Life has a way of breaking you down to rebuild you stronger—if you learn the art of the pivot. My journey from a polio-stricken infant in Cocoa, Florida, to a globally recognized spiritual guide, conjure coach, metaphysical expert, author, teacher, spiritual anthropologist, radio personality, and music entrepreneur demonstrates that every setback carries the seed of a greater comeback. Today, I share my story not for sympathy, but as a blueprint for anyone facing adversity: the power of resilience, spiritual alignment, and deliberate pivots that turn pain into purpose.

Early Adversity: The First Pivot

Polio struck me at just six months old. It ravaged my left leg, hip, and foot. Over the next nine years (ages 3 to 12), I endured seven orthopedic surgeries and spent significant time in the hospital, attending school from a bed during extended rehab. A “normal” childhood—running freely, playing without limits—was never mine. Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) later became a daily battle that continues to this day.

Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that still terrifies families around the world. It appeared during the early-to-mid 20th century. In severe cases, it attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis, disability, and sometimes death. Thanks to vaccines developed by Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Albert Sabin, polio cases dramatically declined worldwide.

However, many survivors continue to face long-term effects through a condition known as Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), which can appear decades after recovery. PPS may include muscle weakness, fatigue, chronic pain, and reduced mobility as the body struggles with damage left behind by the original virus. The story of polio is one of resilience, medical advancement, and the importance of public health awareness.

Yet even then, I learned my first lesson in pivoting: When you fall, get back up—even if you have to crawl. I walked eight times again in my life. That forged an unbreakable spirit. I climbed the steep Inca Trail to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru, unaided, leading my tour group to the top. Positive People Survive (PPS). That experience taught me that limitations are often illusions we accept until we refuse to.

Spirituality has been the central focus of my life for as long as I can remember—even as a small child around the age of three. While other kids played, I was already drawn to the unseen forces, the ancestors, the energies that shape our world. This innate pull shaped my entire path and prepared me for the deeper work that would come.

My heritage added profound layers of spiritual depth. Through my Spanish/Cuban/Bahamian lineage, the Mayombe bloodline runs strong—from Spain through Cuba to Nassau, Bahamas. The ase (spiritual power) of the bush doctor comes from my father's and mother's lineage. These ancestral forces in my DNA were always guiding me. As a spiritual anthropologist, I dedicated myself to studying, honoring, and bridging these living traditions with deep respect, cultural understanding, and practical application for modern life.

From Ministry to Metaphysics and Media: The Major Pivots

I began my public ministry at age 15 in a prominent Missionary Baptist church in Cocoa, Florida. Credentialed and dynamic, my path led through the Church of the Nazarene and the Assemblies of God. Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart recommended me personally during the height of his influence. I organized crusades and poured my heart into organized religion.

But I encountered repeated negativity and what I experienced as spiritual witchcraft in church settings. After deep prayer and reflection, I left organized religion. This was a painful but necessary pivot. I returned to the hoodoo and spiritualism I knew from childhood. To feed my family, I started reading Jungian dream cards at a local new age shop in Cocoa in the early 1990s. That led to phone psychic work and eventually founding DrKioni.com—a platform that has reached clients worldwide.

I transitioned from traditional ministry to embracing the full spectrum of spiritual technologies: conjure, Palo, tarot, hoodoo, and metaphysical coaching. As a spiritual anthropologist, I approach these traditions with scholarly depth, cultural reverence, and a commitment to preserving their integrity while making their wisdom accessible. I’ve authored books like What You Should Know About Witchcraft, Destinies Daughters, The Devil’s Bargain, and The Quantum Alchemist, The Wealthy Witch: Herbal Remedies for Financial Empowerment, and more, blending ancient wisdom and fiction with modern empowerment.

My work has reached hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. I founded, co-hosted, and produced The Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour, a groundbreaking live call-in radio show offering real conjure advice with a panel of vetted spiritual practitioners. We offered complimentary spiritual readings and spiritual education to a global audience. I built a thriving webcast presence that spread messages of empowerment for years. That exposure caught the attention of a New York Times bestselling author.

New York Times bestselling author Christine Wicker featured me prominently across three chapters in her book Not in Kansas Anymore: A Curious Tale of How Magic Is Transforming America, describing me as a man of God with a big heart and powerful juju. National Geographic & the Travel Channel sent production teams to my home to film sizzle reels of me working as a spiritual practitioner. I was chosen for the Dead Files on the Travel ChanneI. I have also been cited and referenced in footnotes and scholarly discussions in other key texts on Hoodoo, conjure, and Mayombe

My dedication to the study and practice of spiritual traditions has also been formally recognized on the highest levels. I was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Metaphysics for my work as a spiritual pioneer by the Universal Life Monastery in Modesto, California. Most significantly, I was elevated to the prestigious Yoruba Ifá Chieftaincy title of Baba Oloye Atunwase Agbaye — “Chief Character Molder of Ita Worldwide” — by His Eminence Owolabi Awodotun Aworeni, the Araba Agbaye and Olu Isese, along with His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, at the World Ifá Headquarters in Oketase, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. These honors represent the culmination of a lifetime of deep spiritual work, cultural bridging, ancestral reverence, and global service, reinforcing my role as a spiritual anthropologist and advocate for the living traditions of hoodoo, Ifá, and metaphysical wisdom.

The Art of the Pivot

The Latest Pivot: Music, Media, and Private Fulfillment

In this current chapter of retired life, I continue navigating the realities of Post-Polio Syndrome while embracing a more private existence. I have retired from the intense global demands of the Dr. Kioni persona, choosing instead a fulfilling life centered on, my relationship with Christ, creation, legacy, and quiet impact. This pivot reflects the same principles I’ve always taught—adapting, realigning, and channeling energy into new forms of expression.

I founded Spirit and Soul Radio as a powerful platform for spreading positivity, uplifting music, and messages of change. Music is another voice for transformation, proving that sound and spirit can heal, inspire, and shift consciousness. Building on this foundation, I established my own ASAP-affiliated record label and music publishing company, Spirit Soul Media Music Publishing.

Through CD Baby and DistroKid distribution, I have released multiple albums—including the Spirit & Soul series and The Best of Spirit & Soul—now available on over 150 streaming platforms worldwide, including Apple Music, Spotify, and many others. These releases blend soulful, empowering, R&B, Hip-Hop, gospel-infused, and spiritually uplifting sounds that carry the same positive message I’ve championed throughout my life.

The Psychology of a Winner: Turning Pain into Power

What defines someone who consistently pivots from adversity to advantage? From my life and work with countless clients, here are key traits I’ve observed and lived:

* Unwavering Resilience: Polio and ongoing PPS taught me the value of persistence. I refuse to let fate or others dictate my reality.

* Spiritual Grounding and Ancestral Connection: My practices—honoring Almighty God and drawing on bloodline ase—provide strength beyond the physical. As a spiritual anthropologist, I explore and apply these traditions responsibly and powerfully.

* Positive Mindset as Discipline: I start each day affirming that it will be amazing. Happiness opens portals of possibility. I genuinely love God, his children, and what I do.

* Courage to Reinvent: Every major transition—from ministry to metaphysics, from public persona to private creative life—required releasing the familiar for the authentic.

* Service and Legacy: Whether through spiritual work, radio, webcasts, books, or now

music and publishing, the focus remains empowerment and positive change. I’ve walked paths in Peru, connected with traditions across the globe, and built platforms that served clients and listeners from Florida and far beyond.

Critics and controversies have come. These too are opportunities to pivot: stay rooted in truth, educate where possible, and keep serving those who resonate with the work. Real winners focus forward.

Your Turn: Master the Art of the Pivot

Every challenge carries within it the seed of transformation. The obstacles you face are not merely barriers—they are invitations to grow stronger, wiser, more spiritually aligned, and more intentional about the life you are creating. When adversity appears, you do not have to surrender your power, purpose, or peace. You can move through difficulty with clarity, resilience, and faith. Here is a powerful framework to help you BLAST through every obstacle life places in your path. What do I mean?

B.L.A.S.T.

B — Build something aligned that serves others—and yourself.

L — Leverage your unique gifts, heritage, and spiritual makeup.

A — Acknowledge the pain without letting it define you.

S — Seek inner guidance—ancestors, Spirit, intuition, or counsel.

T — Take Action with persistence and positivity.

I’ve gone from hospital beds and leg braces to climbing ancient mountains, broadcasting to the world, appearing in landmark books on magic in America, guiding hundreds of thousands, and now releasing my own music on major streaming platforms under my Spirit Soul Media label. Each chapter proves: You don’t have to stay where you started. You can pivot into your power.

Today, I wake up grateful, sending positive vibes and good juju. Follow your passion with all your heart—especially that spiritual calling that may have whispered to you since childhood. The universe responds to those who refuse to stay broken.
